Event Summary:
This event will consist of a round table discussion on framing the priority problem: How to meet the global need to produce more food for a growing population without compromising the planet’s resources. How do we reduce our reliance on synthetic fertilizers and broaden our existing agri-ecosystems?
  1. Soil health has been degrading as we overuse synthetic fertilizers and overwork farmland, reducing arable land and impacting fertility. Improved soil management and a heightened soil care are essential as we face yield slippage, rising food insecurity, loss of farmland to housing and industry, inconsistent soil management, and changing weather patterns.
  2. Climate smart fertilizers must be consistent with sustainable food production and the implementation of resilient agricultural practices. The goal is to increase yield and caloric value and give crops and soil the tools to adapt to climate change.
The round table will be followed by a showcase of Canadian leadership and innovation in the creation of new climate smart product within the intertwined framework of plant nutrient and soil health considerations, including examples of Sultech’s Climate smart fertilizer initiatives: enhancement of organic and mineral fertilizers; and of cellulosic biomass and organic waste.
